Emma Roberts is prone to bursts of laughter, to fond reminiscences of friends and family to a kind of candor that is surprising as well as charming. “Being an actress with the whole world commenting, it was definitely hard at times…where it starts to feel like nothing is yours and nothing is private,” she says. “I love therapy,” she adds. “It’s great to have someone to talk to who’s not your friend, your family…just someone you can talk to and not worry about what they think about you.” How she is perceived, as Roberts makes clear was a major pre-occupation of her young life. “I never felt more comfortable with myself since I turned 24,” she says of her current age. “I feel like I’ve crossed the bridge into being a woman.”
Roberts’s ambition extends beyond acting. “I think as I get older, there might come a time when I don’t want to be in front of the camera anymore and want to be more behind the scenes: I would love to produce and maybe write,” she says. “I thought of it a lot during Scream Queens when every morning there’s full hair and makeup, heels, and minidresses,” she says. “And I thought, you know I kind of want to show up to work one day and not care what I look like. It would be nice to just slip away for a little bit.”
